Shaïna tells the story of French-Iranian lawyer Negar Haeri's investigation to shed light on the case of Shaïna, a 15-year-old girl murdered by her boyfriend in Creil, a town north of Paris. In agreement with Shaïna's family, the lawyer wants to prove that the young girl was neither listened to nor protected by the authorities when she filed a rape complaint two years before her murder. What ensued was a devastating spiral of revenge and violence, amplified by social media, to a point of no return, where Shaïna had no choice but to accept her fate. While the official investigation reveals its too many dark sides, the film reconstructs Shaïna's story from the beginning, accessing her social accounts ignored by the police, listening to her friends, to reconstruct the two years that brought the young woman and her family to a terrible end that no one wanted to prevent, when there was still time to do so.
Somewhere deep in our collective subconscious, rape is always the victim's fault. It is what she wore that day or the way she said “no”; it is her parents who gave her too much freedom; or, again, the way she testifies, without crying enough. We are incapable of accepting the fact that a rape victim can be a victim like any other, just a victim. And so, rape victims are forced to face not only the consequences of violence, but also guilt and shame. This has been going on for centuries and continues to this day. What makes us, as a society, turn our backs on these victims? By looking at Shaïna's story and the two years of her life between her rape and her death, through the investigation and struggle led by lawyer Negar Haeri, I would like the film to offer a human and non-judgmental immersion into the mechanisms that prevent us from listening to rape victims, so that we as a society can finally bring them the justice and support they need.
