"I dannati", Roberto Minervini's first fiction feature film - produced by Okta Film and Pulpa Film with Rai Cinema and realised with the support of Film Commission Torino Piemonte - won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, in the Un Certain Regard section.
The jury of the French kermesse's second competition, chaired by Xavier Dolan, awarded the Best Director prize to Roberto Minervini - internationally renowned for his extraordinary talent as a documentary filmmaker - who with "I dannati" builds an intense reflection on violence within a story of the American Civil War.
Following its world premiere on 16 May at the last 77. Cannes Film Festival - in competition for "Un Certain Regard" - and having been simultaneously released in Italian cinemas distributed by Lucky Red, Roberto Minervini will be in Turin today at the Cinema Nazionale for a screening-event, organised in collaboration with the Film Commission Torino Piemonte.

"I dannati" is produced by Okta Film and Pulpa Film with Rai Cinema and realised with the support of Film Commission Torino Piemonte. Fabrizio Nastasi's Piedmontese company Imago VFX - supervisor of the entire post-production - oversaw part of the film's visual effects, as well as colour correction, finalisation and mastering.
Synopsis
Winter 1862. At the height of the War of Secession, a company of volunteers from the United States Army is sent to guard the uncharted lands of the West. The mission overwhelms a handful of men-at-arms, revealing the ultimate meaning of their journey towards the frontier.
Author's note
"After many films created in that hybrid space that is the "creation documentary", I Dannati represents a new challenge for me: a fictional, historical, costume film, without sacrificing the realism, immediacy and intimacy of my previous works. I hope that I Dannati at the Cannes Film Festival will be as much of a surprise as it was for us who made it".
