Alice and Alessio, two image-makers who never meet, whose paths mirror and reverse each other. Alice writes sacred icons: the icon is visible theology, where the ego dissolves. But the flashes of the faithful cannibalize those golden figures, and so the ego takes shape. Living the Gospel, she founds Casa Aylan, a home for her new family of unaccompanied minors. The house fills with voices, and the silence of visual prayer vanishes. She returns to the icons—this time on display to the world in her studio window. Alessio, two-time World Press Photo winner, portrays human suffering like figures in icons. His images celebrated, the voices of those poor souls absent. On one of his journeys in Ukraine, inside a ruined church, the gaze of a bullet-riddled Christ reaches him. Just a moment. The observer is observed. The photographer photographed. Then he returns to his images, disappearing. Both suspended in ambiguity, in the age of iconoclash.
