Donato Sansone, one of the most original artists and animators on the contemporary scene, lives immersed in a world where reality and imagination blur into one another. Seated at his desk, as he sketches a dark and grotesque figure, his drawing suddenly comes to life: the creature slips off the page and begins to chase him into the real world. From that moment on, Donato — or Donny, as his friends call him — moves through a Turin transformed into a dreamlike landscape where anything can happen: friends change outfits with every shot, mermaids appear in public pools, and memories of the 1980 earthquake shake the façades of buildings. Through a series of surreal encounters with friends, collaborators, and figures from his past, the film becomes a journey into Donny’s mind, where dream and reality, art and life, intertwine until they become indistinguishable.
What Are You Dreaming, Donny? is a dreamlike journey into the imagination of Donato Sansone - a film that transcends the boundaries of traditional documentary to become an immersive experience within the subconscious of a surreal and visionary artist. The visual narrative leads the viewer through a world governed by the illogical and surprising laws of dreams, while Donato’s voice-over comments on the unfolding scenes, recalls moments from his past, and reveals aspects of his creative process - acting as a guide through this voyage into his inner world.
