Artworks are never still. From ancient times, they ’ve been on the move, braving obstacles and dangers, often becoming the stars of stories worthy of a movie. Art movers, experts, restorers, curators, and those who orchestrate the global flow of masterpieces reveal why art travels. Sometimes, it moves out of necessity, like during World War II: relics from the Egyptian Museum were saved by heroes in Turin. Other times, it flees natural disasters, as with the flames that engulfed Notre-Dame in 2019. Art also travels for prestige, as seen in the Mona Lisa’s journey to New York in 1963, planned by Jackie Kennedy. And it moves to be restored, as in the case of the Riace Bronzes returning to their original splendor. Art travels to break down boundaries and cry out against the horrors of war. Guernica toured the world, carrying Picasso’s message until 1992. The treasures of Tutankhamun soared over Israeli-Palestinian bombs in 1970. Today, Ukrainian artifacts are being rescued from missile strikes.

Art on the Run unveils the extraordinary journeys of art masterpieces through the memories of their most trusted guardians: security personnel, installers, conservators, curators, transporters, historians, and archaeologists. The documentary pulls back the curtain on the hidden professions behind great art, following the intricate process of moving a masterpiece from one museum to another. This little-known world operates with its own culture, codes, specialized skills, tools, and strategies, all governed by strict confidentiality agreements. We are captivated by this silent army of caretakers, who sometimes find themselves thrust into perilous adventures, stepping into the role of heroes to save priceless treasures. What drives us to tell this story is the captivating vision of art as a universal bond, traveling across nations to unite people and cultures. With the help of passionate heralds, masterpieces journey the world, spreading knowledge and creativity.
