If there is any meaning to life, Iris has lost it in London. A struggling singer-songwriter, she plays for a handful of pounds in half-empty pubs and works as a dishwasher to pay her rent, which keeps rising every month—proportionally opposite to her will to live. At thirty-five, after countless rejections, Iris has shut herself off from the world, looking at others through a veil of distrust and suspicion. She sees herself as an artist: superior for that reason, but also misunderstood by the "ordinary" people around her. Things take an unexpected turn when her uncle Guglielmo, a former musician turned hairdresser, dies of cancer and leaves her his salon, Roots. Iris wants to sell it immediately, but a clause in the inheritance prevents her: she is obligated to keep it open and manage it for at least one year. Only after that will she be able to do as she pleases. Forced to return to Italy, Iris finds herself working in an environment she initially detests: gossip, chemical smells, commercial music, frivolity, and far too many people—people who, in her view, seem only concerned with appearances. Roots feels like the opposite of the world she had dreamed of. Yet, amidst the chaos of her days, glimpses of something different begin to emerge.  Over the course of the year, Iris faces trials, disasters, and tragicomic encounters that force her to confront herself and others. Working side by side with Rosa and Savino—her sarcastic but surprisingly big-hearted colleagues—and clients whose stories unexpectedly touch her, Iris starts to see that the salon is not just a place of superficiality but a microcosm of authentic and transformative relationships. Between psychedelic revelations, difficult choices, and the reappearance of Kristo, the former leader of the band she played with in London, Iris begins to understand that her uncle left her much more than a salon: he left her a family, an inheritance made of connections and possibilities. When a series of events threatens to close Roots for good, Iris faces a crossroads. Will she abandon everything, as she always has, or stay and fight for something greater than herself? Her decision will not only save the salon but also open the door to a future that unites her two souls: the musician and the hairstylist.  For the first time, Iris begins to see that her dream is not lost but can evolve into something unique and authentic, where beauty and music come together to create a new way of expressing herself and making a lasting mark.

Roots tells the story of Iris, a young woman whose life is profoundly transformed by her work in a hair salon in Turin. Over eight episodes, we explore her journey of personal and professional growth, striking a balance between drama and comedy. The salon becomes a microcosm of human experiences, where the stories of its clients intertwine with Iris's own. Each episode introduces new characters and situations that enrich the plot, addressing universal themes such as identity, self-esteem, family relationships, diversity, and the desire to find one’s place in the world. Sharp and lively dialogues, combined with sensitive and detail-oriented storytelling, offer the audience an authentic glimpse into the daily challenges and victories of the characters. The presence of singers and performers playing themselves adds another layer of authenticity and appeal, opening the narrative to the world of music and celebrating artistic identities. Set in Turin, the series leverages the uniqueness of the location to create a visually rich and culturally significant backdrop. The setting is not just a background; it turns Roots into a journey through the beauty and energy of a vibrant and dynamic city. In a world where every haircut represents a turning point, every conversation reveals something new, and every client carries a story, the series explores the hidden beauty in daily interactions and the transformative power of small changes. Through the kaleidoscope of lives revolving around the salon, we offer an intimate vision of the ongoing search for authenticity, showing that sometimes the deepest transformations begin with a simple mirror. With its unique combination of dramedy and inclusivity, Roots positions itself as a universal tale capable of resonating with both local and international audiences.
