Udine, 1959. Lino, a restless fourteen-year-old labeled as "del morbin", drifts between family reproaches and neighborhood brawls. Everything changes when he meets Tommy, an American merchant who introduces him to Elvis and Rock 'n' Roll. After yet another fight, his parents push him away from school to make him work. Lino decides to run away with his friend Giampaolo to reach Elvis, who is doing his military service in Germany. During the journey, they are joined by Angelo, a young Sicilian. The three cross Europe, facing hunger and hardships, united by the dream of meeting their idol and delivering the sheet music of a popular Italian song: Santa Lucia. Inspired by a true story.
Elvis is not Here is a coming-of-age journey film: two teenage boys searching for their place in the world, during a delicate transitional age. They want to meet their idol, Elvis Presley, and bring him the sheet music for a song, Santa Lucia. This small yet grand dream is the means through which the protagonist seeks himself, the last opportunity before growing up and being forced to work. It's a way to become the first person in Udine capable of doing something extraordinary: convincing Elvis to sing in Italian, to escape his predetermined destiny. For his social redemption, for freedom, for the pursuit of happiness. A happiness then shared with his brotherly friend Giampaolo, in a journey where they will face dangers, cold, unexpected events, and in the blink of an eye, will grow up in their first confrontation with death. Elvis is not Here is also, and above all, a film about male friendship, a theme dear to me, which I have explored in various works with a feminine, intimate, and deep gaze, yet simultaneously curious and ironic. The characters in this story are provincial characters, humble, poor, destined to be forgotten. They will be saved by the audacity of their age. They will be saved by the restlessness of the "morbìn", that need for redemption that drives them towards rock 'n' roll, which in the post-war years was the highest expression of rebellion against the previous generation. They are not characters with particular talents and will not become heroes, but they will succeed in their small yet significant undertaking. From that moment on, the strength acquired will be the engine of their future, ready to take flight towards an irreversibly revolutionized destiny.
