On her last day behind the diner counter, Sara is preparing to leave the province to pursue her dreams. Denis watches her, trying to hold back what they both fear they will lose. In a crystallized, suspended landscape, their farewell reveals the depth of their bond and the heart-wrenching intensity of their separation.
Remains stems from the desire of both authors to confront some shared autobiographical elements, such as the sense of belonging and separation. Sara and Denis are two contemporary characters in their late twenties, portrayed at a turning point in their lives. They are archetypes of their generation, despite the isolated and rural context in which they live. Remains is a contemporary coming-of-age story, combining typical European art-house cinema with new rural American cinema. Building a dialogue between the inner world of the two characters and their context – using a narrative where silences, gestures, and fragments of everyday life are the main means of expression – the aim is to create a cinematic experience that combines formal rigor and emotional depth in a universal visual imagery, giving viewers the space to reflect and feel empathy.
