After more than fifty years, a super-8 camera from the late 1970s, which recorded a scout camp that ended in tragedy with the disappearance of two children, has been found perfectly and miraculously preserved in a forest in Lunigiana. In 1978, a writer in crisis, an uncompromising feminist, a group of ufologists, and a handful of ex-drug addicts had already attempted to solve the mystery of the two scouts' disappearance, coming dangerously close to the truth. Was it an accident? An alien abduction? Could the Moro kidnapping have been somehow connected to the event? What they lacked was the definitive proof. The one which may now be in the footage from the mysterious super-8 camera...
In November 2023, TIWI acquired the option for the audiovisual adaptation of Wu Ming's latest novel, UFO 78. The plan is to adapt the work into a four-episode fictional series, leveraging the growing popularity of documentaries and docu-series also on television and VOD platforms. Historical and fictional facts will be blended into a story that will appear to the audience as a mockumentary docu-series. It will feature interviews and contemporary footage, enriched with archival material - mostly newspapers, old super-8 videos, photos, and audio. These materials will combine original and manipulated elements, using the latest audio and video manipulation techniques to provide historical depth to facts and characters that never existed. The variety of styles and video formats is intended to reflect the storytelling approach that has made Wu Ming's novels popular, exploring contemporary issues by mixing real events with myth and science fiction. The UFO 78 series would be the first audiovisual project based on an original novel by the Wu Ming collective. It aims to be released on March 16, 2028. 50 years after the kidnapping of Aldo Moro.
