Cirques talks for the first time, with an overview, of the world of the nouvelle vague of contemporary Italian circus, with its poetics, practices and protagonists. A gaze from the inside capable of capturing the nuances and, at the same time, divulging the salient features of this movement. A path of young performers that is unprecedented and that has renewed the reality of circus in Italy from north to south, conquering new audiences and inspiring a new generation of artists who have grown up within a new circuit made up of schools, festivals and spaces dedicated to this transforming art.
Shooting a documentary on the Italian contemporary circus seemed to me a natural and spontaneous step. Of course, this is not the case for everyone, indeed, many do not even know of the existence of a contemporary circus in Italy, and this is perhaps my first goal, to bring to light a wealth, to create a possible showcase for a cultural ferment that secretly moves in the “bel paese.”
Luca Quaia
The companies and artists we are talking about have de-romanticized the myth of freedom and put the circus back into play, transforming it into a social and political act. A story made by men and women who do not come from circus families, who decided to come to the circus after a career in theater, dance or after a degree in philosophy.
