Carlotta and Alis are two women, two friends. They can no longer live a normal daily life because they are convinced that there are only a few years left to deal with the climate crisis. So, they have given up their careers and some affection, but they are also willing to give up a more precious commodity, freedom: they have become activists of Ultima Generazione (The last generation). A movement of young activists active throughout Europe and known for its demonstrative actions. For many people, they are "the ones daubing artwork and blocking the streets," but for Martina, the director, they are much more: friends and roommates...a family in their own right. It is hard to watch as they chain themselves to block a street or pour black liquid into the Trevi fountain. It is hard not to intervene when people insult them or police drag them away. But despite understanding the motivations that drive her friends to action, Martina is unable to do what they do. Sometimes they talk about it, some others Martina simply stands by watching a piece of history unfold before her eyes. A story of choices, hardship and responsibility.
Being an activist involves choices but also hardships. What are these young people, who put their freedom on the line for an ideal, willing to give up? It is difficult to accept the way they manifest their dissent, disrupting public events, blocking roads or pouring paint on monuments. This account allows us to know from the inside the dynamics, the language, and the ways of acting of these young people. They seem willing to do anything in the name of preserving a planet they have inherited from previous generations. An unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look in order to understand them instead of judging out of hand. Through the personal journey of the two protagonists, this film aims to "humanize" the theme of environmental activism, that is, to bring back to a personal dimension an issue about which public opinion is already widely polarized. Through the empathy generated by the telling of the two personal stories we see possible a change in attitude toward this complex social segment. Through an impact campaign, a rethinking of climate change-related policies is also possible.
