On March 13, 1994, the rock band Marlene Kuntz released Catartica, an album that set a milestone in the Italian rock music scene. Twenty years later, the Cuneo-based band brings those songs back on tour. The movie follows the Catartica 2014 tour throughout Italy, reconstructing the first three years of life of the band, from its birth, in 1988, to the release of their first album.
Marlene Kuntz’s story – the story of the transition from a provincial-town band struggling to find its own audience to a benchmark for the Italian rock scene of the two following decades – will be narrated through original archive materials, interviews with those years’ main protagonists such as Cristiano Godano, Riccardo Tesio, Luca Bergia, Gianni Maroccolo, Franco Ballatore, Alex Astegiano, Giovanni Lindo Ferretti and Federico Fiumani, and live performances.
“Complimenti per la festa” originates from long-term professional and personal contacts with the band. Simone Cargnoni, photographer and assistant director, documented the band’s 2012 tour, and created the photo booklet of the album “Nella tua luce”. Together with Sebastiano Luca Insinga, the movie’s director, he shot the video of the first single of Marlene Kuntz’s new album, “Soltizio”, co-produced by Sony Italy.
This new movie originates from an idea of Sebastiano Luca Insinga, who took the opportunity of Marlene Kuntz’s new tour to narrate an important piece of Italian rock music. The year 2014 marked the twentieth anniversary of “Catartica”, Marlene Kuntz’s first studio album, which stands as the watershed for a whole generation of rock music enthusiasts. The band decided to go on a celebrative tour – more than 30 dates throughout the whole Italy – and to include the entire album in the concerts’ playlist. The movie will narrate this tour and the critical praise Marlene Kuntz received within the Italian music scene.
