The 40th edition of the Torino Film Festival features a well-structured presence of Film Commission Torino Piemonte for this year as well, both regarding the various movies in the festival’s program and the important representation of the Piedmontese audiovisual industry: filmmakers, production companies, industry events that fully show the growth, the dynamism and the maturity reached by the industry itself.
Six projects supported by Film Commission Torino Piemonte will be presented in different sections of the TFF during the festival: the novel section Nuovimondi will offer the preview of “La memoria del mondo” (The memory of the world), a feature film directed by Mirko Locatelli and produced by Strani Film, realized thanks to the support of the Piemonte Film Tv Development Fund. The project – presented the previous year at the Torino Film Industry, during the pitching sessions about projects in progress – tells the story of Adrien – art scholar and biographer of the visual artist Ernst Bollinger – who finds himself imprisoned in a story of his own creation, co-protagonist of the last chapter of the great Master’s artistic life.
4 titles will be presented as Fuori Concorso: after the success obtained at the latest Festival of Annecy and the pre-opening of the Festival of Locarno, “Manodopera” (Manpower) reaches Turin: an animated feature film directed by Alain Ughetto, produced by the Piedmontese company GraffitiDoc by Enrica Capra and realized thanks to the support of Film Commission Torino Piemonte – Piemonte Doc Film Fund. The director of Italian origins tells the story – accompanied by the music of Nicola Piovani – of his family in a small Piedmontese village: the hardships of life in the first years of the 1900s, the hunger, the wars, the grief, and the decision to relocate in France to start over, but keeping Italy in their heart.
Two documentaries must be added: “Eroina, la generazione perduta” (Heroin, the lost generation) by Marco Turco, produced by MIR Cinematografica and Luce Cinecittà with the participation of Archivio Audiovisivo del Movimento Operaio e Democratico and the collaboration of Rai Cinema, and “Lotta continua” (Steady Fight), the docu-film produced by Publispei in collaboration with Rai Documentari and RaiPlay. Two projects realized partly in Turin, which focus on the ‘60s and ‘70s of Italian life and highlight events with strong historic, political, and social connotations.
Carlo Rivolta, a journalist among the most acute of his time and narrating voice for “Eroina, la generazione perduta”, was one of the first in the ‘70s to illustrate the phenomenon using the columns of a newly founded newspaper, “Repubblica”, thus becoming the voice of a generation in free fall and sharing their destiny up to the extreme consequences.
Freely inspired by the book “I ragazzi che volevano fare la rivoluzione” by Aldo Cazzullo, the movie directed by Tony Saccucci “Lotta continua” narrates a decade of Italian story, and it does so through the voices of some then-kids; from the first march inside Fiat to the elections of ’76, passing through the hot falls, the Piazza Fontana massacre, Pinelli’s death, and the homicide of the police commissioner Calabresi.
The Fuori Concorso section will also offer a special showing of “Il Nostro Generale” (Our General), a series by Lucio Pellegrini produced by Simona Ercolani, with the direction of Lucio Pellegrini and Andrea Jublin, which tells the story of the special anti-terrorism unit created by General Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa – interpreted by Sergio Castellitto – to combat the attack of the Red Brigades to the Government in an out-and-out war to defend democracy.
The series – a co-production Rai Fiction-Stand By Me with Sergio Castellitto, realized in Turin the last February for three weeks with the collaboration of the Comando Generale dell’Arma dei Carabinieri and the support of Mic and of Film Commission Torino Piemonte – was also shot in some of the real places of the narrated events.
Lastly, the event screening of “Tre Punto Sei” (Three Point Six) will complete the presence of FCTP at the TFF: after twenty years since the shootings in Turin of the original and intense urban noir directed by Nicola Rondolino, the Festival will show the restored copy of the feature film which tells the story of the corrupted policeman Salvo (Valerio Binasco) and the criminal Dante (Marco Giallini), in an important moment to keep remembering Nicola with his friends and colleagues.
Film Commission Torino Piemonte will also be busy with TFI Torino Film Industry, an initiative that this year reaches its 5th edition and that FCTP has been coordinating since the beginning.
Meeting, market, and platform for international coproduction that puts under the spotlight new talents and new trends in cinema and audiovisuals, TFI Torino Film Industry will take place at the Circolo dei lettori from the 24th to the 30th of November, simultaneously with the Torino Film Festival, thus strengthening its identity as the work & business soul of the historic cinematographic event of the city.
