12 March 1985. Sergio Cosmai, prison’s director of the Cosenza jail, is killed by the 'Ndrangheta. The crime went unpunished for more than 30 years, also because its instigators were already in prison, in those same cells that Sergio Cosmai directed, in that 'deflected' penitentiary institute he was trying to restore to legality. His death did not have the same resonance as the great massacres of our country, but it is considered, today, the first murder in a long series that will lead up to the sadly notorious events of Capaci. The documentary traces, through the use of archive material, interviews, reenactments and docu-fiction, the events that led to the director's tragic death, the first excellent murder for Cosentino crime. Sergio Cosmai's is the story of an anti-Mafia hero, but it is also the story of a man. It will be told to us by his colleagues, the judge and the journalists who followed the trials, but above all by his wife Tiziana Palazzo and their children Rossella and Sergio Cosmai.
The jail director Sergio Cosmai, supported by a few very loyal officers from the penitentiary police, managed to bring about a change in a prison where the bosses were used to making rules. The moral uprightness, determination, and courage he showed, however, led him to a progressive isolation: people from the judiciary, a large part of the institutional and political world, animated by the vibrant protests of the bosses who were forced to serve their sentences without the 'favors' and 'advantages' of the past, openly distanced themselves from the director. This did not stop Cosmai from pursuing justice. In this film we tell the story of a courageous man, a hero who breaks a tried and tested mechanism, restoring legality. A subject we know well, right down to the social and criminal dynamics that characterized the city of Cosenza and Calabria, territories devastated by the bloody violence of mafiosi who have almost always gone unpunished. With the film The Cosmai Murder we want to denounce this impunity, doing justice to a man who sacrificed his life for the good of the State.
